  Yes Steel, I agree that much of the Bible is borrowed and has source references most of them either hidden or lost. 12 x 12 x 1000 must have sounded impressive to the mystical numerologists in the second century but I ask why should the brainstorms of the writer of the Apocalypse have any meaning today?

  What is the proof of the pudding here? Ultimately is anyone better off for learning the nightmarish stories of Revelation, or knowing why they were written or how they were intended to be understood?

  Both by the passage of time and the history of Jehovah's Witnesses preaching, it has been shown that none of the Bible stories have any prophetic use or any relevance at all to those outside of religious cults.

  Perhaps if you are an insane and celibate monk spending some time each day in self flagellation, then the book of Revelation may have some appeal for you.

  "The Bible must not been taken literally unless we say otherwise", say the Guardian Of the Doctrines.

  JWs have a pick and mix bunch of teachings whichever sounds the most plausible for the moment-- then it can be altered later on when it starts to look outdated. Crass idiotic religion.

  ... they've accepted me!

  finance is already sorted - they're waiting for me to give them my new student number so that they can start paying me.

  just need to formally accept bristol's offer and sort out accommodation.. accommodation should be ok - i've been told priority is given to new students, plus i'm enrolling onto a program for a real degree as a postgraduate - i won't be studying gender studies or some crap like that.

  Good on you LUHE! JWs miss out on the thrill of actually learning about real things.

  How could anyone study any of the life sciences and not be convinced of evolution? Imagine a JW pioneer with a part-time job doing palaeobiology!

  It is my opinion that the geological column should be a primary school subject since its consequences impinge on many aspects of real life.

  a user over on the jwtalk forum recently shared a warning over his research on evolution in preparation for an assigned talk.

  after detailing a couple of the tidbits that he learned of during his research, he went on to say:.

  The real reason for serious alarm by JWs finding hints of reality in scientific accounts-- is that it could be true, Heaven forbid!

  If the org is actually found to be wrong it would mean a life-changing emotional upheaval, like a ton of bricks falling on the doubter.

  Much easier for a JW to stay in the cocoon-- so the conditioned response to secular sources being right is to bury your head and ignore reality. That is "Keep taking the cool aid".

  After all, this is what it's like being in a religious cult . . .

  Everything is wrong with JW org.

  O'Brien here is trying limit the damage of the ARC findings and conclusion which he acknowledges will be put on the internet.

  He made a fool of himself at the ARC hearings with his inability to see the issues as legally presented and instead pathetically repeated himself defending the party line. The party line being that scriptural values, i.e. that the need for "two witnesses" to an offence, cannot be altered. This as everyone knows bears the blind unthinking illogicality of the fact that sex criminals remove themselves from other's gaze. What he actually meant was that Watchtower dogma-- which he equates with scripture, must not be seen to be compromised because that is the JW strong hand which they play in the religion game.

  Laws penned two thousand six hundred year ago may have served for desert goat herders but not for people today who know that compassion and child welfare and development is paramount and enshrined in modern laws and social services.

  The very basis for the JW religion, that the Bible is sacred, is outdated and plain wrong. To believe and act on it literally as JWs do is ignorant and harmful.

  Welcome IamwhatIam! As your name implies it is far far better to simply be one's self as opposed to being a Watchtower drone.

  Perhaps you could give us a flavour of how Denmark is today in relation to being in and leaving the JW org. Denmark being noted here in UK for its progressive and rational thinking.

  One other question you might be able shed light on; how did a JW assembly hall in Denmark come to have an eye symbol with radiating sight lines built into it as seen in the aerial plan of its layout?

  abraham was tested by god (genesis 22:1) to know whether he would abandon his attachment towards his son.. attachment is a sign of ego, the fountain head of all vices.

  when you ignore all the factors and forces (known and unknown) that are at work behind every happening, you tend to say “i did this and that”thus taking credit for which your part is too negligible.

  it is like a farmer taking credit for the agricultural products.

  The account of David and the Phillistines is grotesque but of course divinely inspired! However it is unlikely to be true, just a tale to say how the hero David went to ridiculous lengths in affirming the tribal Jewish customs to gain the king's approval to get the princess as his wife. Forget the toll of 200 needless killings amongst the neighbours who are worthy of death because they have a different god. If they worship a different god they must be treated as sub-human and its no loss to murder them in Jehovah's eyes. Such are the sacred Bible values. Anyway how can this be useful guidance for anybody in the 21st century?

  Yes Ireaeus God suffers from all of the worst of human traits including egoism as you point out. God just can't seem to manage without the attachment of puny humans to assist him!

  It was the story of Abraham and Isaac seen through the eyes of Kierkegaard (a theist) which made the penny drop for me and I became atheist. This tale is obviously an early moral tale from polytheistic times when heroes spoke and usually argued personally with their deity. The ugly human sacrifice account promoted an appalling morality which like the Watchtower's is not above ending your children's lives for the sake of fidelity to the cult.

  God is the ego-maniac par excellence, his genocidal lust, homophobia, obsessive patriarchy, nationalism, war-mongering-- "dash all the unbelievers to death including infants" etc, is done with an evil vindictiveness and worse still, he wants perpetual worship for this!

  Could it be that the powerless Judean peasants living under the political domination of a foreign empire, were projecting these traits onto an imaginary divinity who they hoped might save them from their oppressor? Could it?
